August 2017 Summary

Logo smallThis month turned in some great finds. Ninety-six items were grabbed for a total of right at five hundred dollars which netted a retail of just over thirty-six thousand. This ratio was not near as good as previous months turning in a retail equivalent of only seventy-two times the purchase price. My goal each month is a retail comparison of at least 100 times what I pay.

Ralph Lauren Purple Label houndstoothRalph Lauren Purple Label window paneTreasures – Each month has its exciting finds that you associate that month with and this time it was not one but two brand new, never been worn, Purple Label Ralph Lauren three-piece suits. Each had the tags hanging off the button holes as well as the indication that these were ready for the favorite tailor to make the necessary adjustments and sew on the cuff buttons after pulling out the white thread that runs along the top of the shoulders and down the sleeves. The pants were unhemmed ready for a decision to cuff or not to cuff. Another brand that I especially look for is that from the company of Brioni. They, in my opinion, set the mark for quality and attention to detail that other shirts simply cannot aspire to. I also found my first shirt from Loro Piana which comes about as close as any of the others in my collection to the quality of Brioni. In the category of ties, the name of Missimo Bizzocchi is one to keep an eye out for. He is the chairman of Kiton in North America and has his  own brand as well. The quality is top notch as you would expect from someone that represents Kiton. Another brand to look for is that from Stefano Ricci. These are beautiful in both their appearance as well as in the time and quality that shows they want to be the best.

Canali and Burberry suitsSuits – It is always a great thrill to find a top-of-the-line suit hanging within reach, both physically as well as financially.  The two Purple Label Ralph Laurens top this list as mentioned in the previous paragraph but I was also able to find a couple of well-fitting suits from Burberry London and an almost new Canali. Both of these companies bring a slightly higher price at all of the Goodwill stores.

Suit jackets by Etinne Aigner, Isaia, Oxxford Clothes, Burberry, Ermenegildo Zegna and Z ZegnaJackets – I held back on the purchase of any more dress jackets with the exception of four that I just could not walk out the store without. These were three black jackets from Burberry London and the other two from Ermenegildo Zegna. One of the Zegna jackets shows that it was made in Mexico and I had passed it up the previous week but after trying it on, I found that it fit well enough as though it was especially tailored that I had to grab it.  An article on the web said that the quality from Mexico should be similar as to what would be found in Europe.  I thought it worth the price to verify this.  The last jacket turned out to be a nice dark red, all leather, Etienne Aigner made in Hong Kong and of course, just my size.

16 shirtsAdditional shirts added at the last minute plus the Fendi tie.Shirts – Despite holding out to look for only top quality, high-ended shirts, I was able to still find twenty-two items that fit this bracket. There were the names of Giorgio Armani (3), Borelli, Brioni, Burberry (3), Charles Tywhitt, Ermenegildo Zegna (4), Eton (2), Givenchy, Gucci, Ike Behar, Lacoste, Loro Piana, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. Not a bad haul considering I was trying to hold back.

pants by Zegna, and LacostePants – There are some days when you find absolutely nothing and other days that make up for those. I had one day where I found seven pair of Ermenegildo Zegna casual and dress trousers at three different stores on the same day. That was quite unusual because I feel like it is a banner day when I can find just one pair. One of these pair had the five asterisks which tells me they are above their average quality, you know, five stars. Two other pair of pants that were selected were from Lacoste and a Santorelli luxury serge/Romeo.

many ties of great brandsTies – A near record number of forty ties were found with a good selection being on a couple of days just as the employee was putting them out on the racks. These were well represented by Aquascutum, Brioni (3), Burberrys’, Canali (2), Charvet, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana (2), DolcePunta (2), English Laundry, Ermenegildo Zegna (10), Fendi (2), Massimo Bizzochi, Piaget, Puccini, Robert Jensen, Rubinacci, Salvatore Ferragamo (4), Stefano Ricci (4) and Tyresö Kommun. A few newcomers were located from DolcePunta, Rubinacci and Tyresö Kommun that I had not seen before but upon a quick search on the Internet with my cell phone, I was able to see that they did command a nice retail price.

Shoes by Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo and GucciShoes – Some very good examples of Italian shoe companies were represented here. For an average cost of about ten dollars each, I was able to pick up three black leather pairs of shoes from Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci. This was my first pair from Gucci and of course they were two sizes too small but it is nice to have the shoes to see the fantastic quality of each of these brands, especially for this price.

Suit hangersHangers – Locating a good set of suit hangers is hit or miss but I always make it an effort to check each stores section where the maple and cedar racks may be found. Only four good representatives were located this time around. These certain ones allow you to hang your pants over a rod but my preferred hanger has strong clips to grab the cuffs so that the pants naturally hang and pull out the wrinkles due to the full weight.

Stetson Mitchell hatCoach belts, Louis Roth cufflinks and shirt studs, Lane jewelry box and socksAccessories – You never know what you might find that you didn’t know you couldn’t live without. That of course would fall into this category. In this area of the country, we have some formal events that demand the wearer to show up in a tuxedo. I was able to find a nice set of shirt studs along with a pair of matching cuff links from Louis Roth. The set was well worth the $2.24 paid. Another fantastic purchase was a Stetson Mitchell hat that walked out with me for only $5.59. My grandfather always wore a Stetson and I will wear this in his memory. Besides, it looks good atop my noggin. The name of Coach is very popular these days and I was able to find two very nice men’s belts from this company. One was found for about three dollars while the other was asking a ten spot. Wrought iron clothes hangerTo have a place to hang all of the best clothing I locate, I have to have something to hang the items on. A wrought iron clothes rack was found for only $3.74 and will make for a great place to gain easy access to some of my best shirts and pants. I was very surprised at how much a miniature cedar box from Lane retailed for that I was able to find for about four dollars. You can tell it was of nice quality by the fit and the accessory hinges.

As with previous months, the following chart is broken down into different categories with the subtotal for each, the amount paid, tagged amount and the retail price with a link, where available, as to where the price was located. I hope this chart becomes a valuable tool for you in making a choice when locating that high-end item you might run across.

Knowing your brands, as to which command a greater return on your investment, is good business sense. Become familiar with the brands that sell well or have long lasting international respect and when you find them in good condition, they will bring you a good net satisfaction. Good luck with your Goodwill hunting.
