April 2019 Summary

Logo small     For the purchases in the area Goodwill stores, only forty-one items with an average retail of about 39 times as much as I paid were purchased this month but the names were certainly noteworthy. Each day is a new surprise mixed in the past weeks run through at each store. I’ve learned to pay more attention to the current color tag for that week eliminating the past colors since they were scrutinized previously.

Treasures – It is difficult to choose what would be considered a treasure and what is not when my taste changes in these close to 5,000 items gathered over the past five years. I will admit that the Ermenegildo Zegna dress shoes, the Valentino sport jacket, the three Gucci ties and the very large M.I. Hummel figurine definitely fit this category. The rest of these items are right behind this class and deserve special mention as well.

Dress Jackets – Suits and dress jackets physically take up more room than most items that I look for so I have had to cut back and choose only those jackets that warrant closer inspection. Two such items were the black Burberrys suit jacket that a random woman made comment while I had it on how good it looked. That sold it right then and there. My daughter reminded me that the color black washes me out and is not a color that looks good on me. Looks like this might make its way to eBay shortly.
The other “had to have” jacket bears a seldom seen name where I shop and that is the name of Valentino. At first, it appeared to be made for a woman with the built-in shoulder pads but the buttons are located on the proper side in front. Besides, it looks great in the mirror.
Another last minute pick up was for a friend who needed a tuxedo for an upcoming prom. Isn’t it funny how you earn a certain reputation and all of the sudden you are the expert in that field.

Shirts – Shirts are typically the easiest to run through since the brand label is clearly visible at the very top. This isn’t always the case when the rack becomes so full that you are unable to pull the hangers away from one another to see who made the shirt. The plastic hangers usually don’t fair very well under the pressure of the tug and pull and break easily. This was the case this month but I did find some really nice shirts.
These included a Western style brown Ariat Rebar VentTek picked up for my daughter for her work with Western wear.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, I located a nice Giorgio Armani Collezioni dress shirt for half price making it well worth the five-dollar bill asked for it.
Next on the list was a beautiful blue Burberry London dress shirt that will look great with blue jeans or a Sunday suit. It’s hard to go wrong with this British brand which holds its value for a very long time.
Charles Tyrwhitt is always worth a second look over and this light blue window pane will look good under a grey suit any day.
I have reservations in purchasing recently made Christian Dior shirts from certain parts of Asia but this one comes from Hong Kong and I know it represents the European quality Christian Dior I remember from years past. The light green is just the right shade to work with blue jeans on that certain event or special occasion.
The next four come from Ermenegildo Zegna and cover quite a wide spectrum of dress. The thick red window pane shirt would feel great on a cold winter evening, while the other three would meet the requirements for a dressier circumstance.

Sweaters – There are some brands you see on a rare occasion and in my area of shopping the name of Rag & Bone is one that sends chill bumps up and down my arm. This certain item is a full length sweater and was sold as a marketing venture with Target. My daughter told me that some of these one day only sales are sold out in a matter of minutes when Target announces the limited sale ahead of time. This four-hundred-dollar item was one of those that I was lucky to pick up for less than seven dollars.

Ties – I am always on the lookout for the higher end name brands you can usually find with men’s neckties and was fortunate to find some all together on a certain lucky visit. The brands I found are listed in alphabetical order: Barindelli & Trezzi, Burberrys (2), Charvet, Ermenegildo Zegna (4), Gucci (3), Holland & Sherry and a Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

Shoes – A very lucky find was that of the brand Ermenegildo Zegna. Not only did I find one but there was a second pair of black dress shoes the very next week. This makes only the third pair of this brand of shoes I have been able to locate with the first pair showing up the very month before. My $15.98 for the two shoes yielded $1,945.00 if purchased at the retail price.
Another great name in footwear can be found with the Lucchese Western boots. These are some of the more expensive boots I was able to find which are sold at our local Boot Barn store. They are super comfortable, very high quality, last a life time and are great looking. Although I paid quite a bit more for one pair, the fit was great and I know these will outlast me if properly taken care of. A second pair were located high on a shoe rack just waiting to be picked up. These are a beautiful golden brown pair of Lawrend Round Toes. On the next to the last day of the month, I ran across a third pair of Lucchese boots. This time they were the L1505 black cherry goat skin that I picked up for $14.99 and retail for $895.00 and they look like new. Of course, they were my daughter’s size and she immediately said they belonged to her. Of course they do. Here is a last minute photo of these great pair of boots.
Rated as one of the Top 35 most expensive shoes for men, Church’s is listed with a beautiful set and I can see why with the suede pair I purchased with this name I was able to find the last week of the month. These are waterproof, good looking and super comfortable. This English made pair look like they would last a long time and their timeless beauty shows the quality built in.
Another pair of cedar shoe trees were located for $2.39 but good examples are becoming more scarce for some reason. I just purchased two new pair of cedar boot trees from the Boot Barn that were listed for $27.99 each set. It is important for the longevity and keeping the shape of your expensive footwear by making sure each has a matching set of cedar trees whether they be boots or dress shoes.

Accessories – There are a few names in cookware that spell quality and two of those names are Longaberger and Pampered Chef. I located a very nice 9” square Nature’s Garland vegetable bowl by Longaberger for eight dollars to be used as a present to someone I know that collects this very nice product.
Pampered Chef is easy to spot with the rough looking tan stoneware. I was unaware that I now own eleven pieces of this product in various shapes and uses. Five of these were picked up just this month. It didn’t take long to run out of storage space in my kitchen but most of the pieces I have are like new and cost one tenth of the retail price by purchasing them at my favorite Goodwill stores. Now on to learning to cook with this great set of cookware!
With a very nice collection of expensive neck ties, it was time to find a way of storing them properly separate from the others I have learned from. A narrow wooden container with a latch just the width of a tie works great when the ties are rolled and neatly placed within. This container works great and holds some of my more prized selections for those special occasions when only the best silk will do.
Saving one of the best purchases for last is an 11½” HUM 7/III Merry Wanderer M.I. Hummel figurine. I was able to purchase it for a little over one hundred dollars but it comes in with a value of right at $1,650.00. The sticker price is still on the bottom showing the initial price of $600 for this older piece but to replace it with a brand new one of this size would cost me $1,700.00.

It was a good month! The following is a list of the items purchased this month with the price I paid, the tagged price and a representative retail value of that item or one much like it.
