April 2017 Summary

Logo smallApril is the month for tornadoes in my area and it felt like I was creating one running through all the Goodwill stores locally. Two large goals were met this month: hitting the three-digit mark of having the items worth more than 100 times what I paid and having the total reach over $50,000 if purchased at their retail value. Of course, it wouldn’t have hit that last mark had I not found right at ninety items. Surprisingly, there were no pants or overcoats located to add to this list this month. The following is what I was able to locate and purchase this past April.

Aquascutum, Burberry's and Sartoria Castangia jacketsTreasures – Every now and then you run across a name you haven’t heard of but the quality is clearly apparent. Such was the case of a Castangia Sartoria jacket with its beautiful hand stitching, surgeon sleeves and a great Italian fit. I had never heard of this brand but a quick search on my cell phone while standing in the aisle said to put it immediately in the basket and enjoy it later. L-R: Lubium Loro Piana, Oxxford, Versace, Zegna x2Another great jacket, but a name I am well acquainted with is that of Oxxford Clothes. The $4,600 Gibbons two-button jacket landed in my basket for only $5.59. A number of tuxedo shirts from Armani and Jos. A Bank were picked up for those special occasions as well as a very nice Brioni plaid shirt. As sweaters go, you can’t do much better than those from Brioni, Ralph Lauren Purple Label and Carolina Herrera. These three make any trip well worth the while. The names of Bvlgari, Stefano Ricci and Oxxford Clothes represented special pickups in the neck tie section. Salvatore Ferragamo is always a welcome name to locate when cruising through the shoe rack looking inside each and every shoe for that reclusive brand. Finding a Louis Vuitton purse always begs the question as to whether it is the real thing or a very good fake. Kiton shoe bagsThis one that I purchased for $14 appears to be the real thing and should make for a great birthday present for one of my daughters in the near future. It’s always good to plan ahead for special events like these and have an item worthy of this celebration without spending a fortune. Another fantastic but relatively scarce name is that of Kiton. They make the very best clothing, shoes, belts … everything. I picked up two pair (4) of Kiton shoe bag covers for a total of $10. Anything with that name located on it shows that it lives up to its slogan of the “Best of the best plus one”.

Burberry London and Givenchy Monsieur suitsSuits – One of my favorite names in suits, well everything else they make as well, is Burberry. When you can find a very nice navy Burberry London suit that is just your size for less than twelve dollars, it makes its way to the buggy, post haste. The same goes for a brown Givenchy Monsieur suit. Prices at the Goodwill stores in my area have recently been marked down for suits from the usual $19.99 to $14.99 and with my 20% discount coupon, each was purchased for $11.97. A good investment for those days when you want to present your best and go from navy (power) to brown (trust) while looking professional.

Canali dress jacketsDress Jackets – Sixteen dress jackets were picked up this month. I was trying to cut back since they take up a lot of room but check out this list of jackets and you will understand why it made it to sixteen. Aquascutum double breasted, Burberry’s (3), Giorgio Armani, Canali (4 in cashmere, silk, super 120’s), Castangia Sartoria, Ermenegildo Zegna (2), Lubiam Loro Piana tuxedo, Oxxford Clothes Gibbons, Versace double breasted, and Yves Saint Laurent. Great names for some great quality jackets! (See also photographs above)

April shirt purchaseShirts – Twenty-eight shirts were picked up. Shirts are easy to cruise through with their tags sitting up next to the neck of the hanger just begging to be seen. Here is what I was able to locate. Again, I am trying to limit my selection but some of these just jumped into my buggy wanting to go home with me. Tuxedo shirtsGiorgio Armani (3, Collezioni tuxedo), Bogosse, Brioni, Burberry, Canali, Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna (7), Eton, Façonnable, Harry & Sons, I Love Ugly, Ike Behar, John Nordstrom, Jos. A Bank (tuxedo), Lorenzini, Psycho Bunny, Rag & Bone, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent pour homme, and Zumo.

Sweater April purchaseSweaters – I have experienced a new awakening about the retail price some sweaters go for on the high end scale of clothing. The Brioni I located has a retail in Neiman Marcus of almost two thousand dollars and the Ralph Lauren Purple Label is right behind it at more than twelve hundred. Wow! Each of these was purchased for only $4.99. Others located worth grabbing were from Giorgio Armani A|X, Carolina Herrera, I Levrieri (2) and a grey Lyle & Scott merino.

April tie purhaseTies – Once again, the number of ties fell behind the number of shirts this month with only thirteen picked out of the hanging racks. A name I didn’t expect to find was that of Bvlgari. The tie is in the upper region of pricing coming in at $245 just above Canali at $230 but quite a bit less than the Oxxford Clothes tie I found that sells for $295. Other ties located were from English Laundry, Ermenegildo Zegna Couture, Ermenegildo Zegna Disegno Esclusivo, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stefano Ricci and Valentino.

April shoe purchaseShoes – My son needed some good quality shoes that were slip resistant so I located two of the Ecco brand in his shoe size and this met his requirement. Two other shoe brands worth having in my closet are the Salvatore Ferragamo wing-tip tassel loafers and the To Boot New York Calhern. The other items found in this category are the shoe trees from FootJoy, Men’s Wearhouse and Rumson Whitehouse Hardy New York.

Setwell hangersHangers – I was surprised at the high price some of these maple suit hangers retail for. Setwell is one of the best brands to look for and has a retail price of more than $57 each but are well worth the price I paid of $1.19 per item. Suits last much longer when well supported by the wide, smooth maple from this company of hangers. I was lucky to come across seven which had been put out on the floor that same day.

Pocket Square – It was an unusual month for locating good pocket squares. I found a brown plaid pocket square with the quickly recognizable Burberry Equestrian Knight and a beautiful Dominie plain white. Two others of notable quality but no name on their tags were from Japan and China.

Louis Vuitton purseAccessories – This is another category, always with interesting surprises. Here they are in order: Budweiser select cigar humidor (great for storing photographs), Drake’s silk suspenders, Hanes socks, Kiton Munich shoe bag covers (2 sets), Louis Vuitton Alma PM monogram cloth purse, Lucien Piccard 11567-01 Adamello Chronograph new in the box, full bottle of Ralph Lauren Romance Eau de Parfum, and a US Mint set of 2003 quarters.Lucien Piccard watch

As with previous months, the following chart is broken down into different categories with the subtotal for each, the amount paid, tagged amount and the retail price with a link, where available, as to where the price was located. I hope this chart becomes a valuable tool for you in making a choice when locating the high-end item you might run across.

Knowing your brands, as to which command a greater return on your investment, is good business sense. Become familiar with the brands that sell well or have long lasting international respect and when you find them in good condition, they will bring you surprisingly great net satisfaction. Good luck with your Goodwill hunting.

March 2017 Summary

Logo smallA big thank you to everyone who donates to all of the Goodwill stores! You may even see something you donated on this site if you live in my area of hunting.

This month of March yielded a fresh assortment of selections due to a couple of new stores opening within their expanded area of collection.  Although I spent more than usual on ninety items and didn’t meet the target three-digit retail goal of 100 times what I paid (this time only 81x), there were some real gems worth purchasing. I have set my focus upon only higher-end items despite Goodwill trying to tempt all of us with their renewed selection of month old merchandise offered at only $1 each. It isn’t out of the ordinary to see a little old lady trying her best to push two buggies full and overflowing to the checkout once again.

Treasures – There were a good number of “treasures” found this past month. Two suits worth mentioning in this category were a Prince of Wales Burberry pants and jacket picked up for less than twelve dollars and a like-new Classic V2 Gianni Versace tuxedo that fits very well. Along the lines of Italian suits were also located a couple of dress jackets from Versace and Gucci. I always like finding anything from Brioni and a deep green shirt showed up on the rack at a favorite haunt. Due to my creating a new web page comparing shirt prices at the high-end stores locally, I also located a shirt from Yohji Yamamoto where they can be purchased new at Barney’s beginning with a price of $630. When the snow birds come down for the winter, they will typically “dump” their high priced sweaters and overcoats, not needing them in this warmer climate. Burberry, Ermenegildo Zegna, Lanvin and a purple label Ralph Lauren were picked up for as little as $3.74. Ties are always a favorite due to finding expensive names for affordable prices. Kiton, Tiffany, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Loro Piana, Charvet and Stefano Ricci were a few of the names that showed up. A number of items in the accessories category were found with names like Fendi, and Prada in the form of purses that my daughters will probably fight over as to who gets which one. I also picked up three older Hummel figurines, two of which dated to 1956.

Suits – The nice thing about finding suits that fit you in the Goodwill is that you do not have to look around to match a pair of pants to a jacket that you like, especially when it is of a shade of blue or brown that you don’t have pants to go with. Burberry is a great brand to find and wears very nicely, is well made and should last a long time if taken proper care of. I found a charcoal colored Burberry Prince of Jackets and suits for March 2017Wales just my size for $11.98 and can’t wait to wear it to church this coming Sunday. A second great find well worth the $15.97 paid was a Gianni Versace Classic V2 tuxedo that looked as though it had never been worn. Luckily, both suits fit very well and should need no tailoring adjustments. Total retail for the two suits amounted to $5,670 with my out-of-pocket being only $27.95.

Dress Jackets – Four jackets were added to my closet this month. The name of Canali is always a welcome brand to find as they are well made, soft to the touch and look quite remarkable when worn with a nice pair of matching pants. I paid less than five dollars for such a black, classic blazer. A second, more casual, tan corduroy jacket with the name of Emile Lafaurie fit nicely and was added to this month’s selection. The next two dress jackets have a story of their own. Goodwill sorts their merchandise into various categories, hangs the items together on a mobile rack and make their way into the area of the store where the items are to be placed. I spotted just such a rack and being the first to see it, I had first choice after asking permission from the attendant. There were a few jackets hanging together and as I looked to identify the first black wool coat, the inside pocket label with the name of Versace showed it’s black lettering and prominent head of medusa. What a nice way to start the day’s search.  The next jacket added to the excitement as I opened an obvious well-made jacket to discover that it showed an equally recognizable name of GUCCI! The attendant saw my excitement and asked what I had discovered. I showed her the two names and she asked how much they were tagged for. When I showed her the prices of $9.99, she said that someone in the back obviously didn’t know what they were doing. I just smiled. Total retail for all four jackets picked up this month amounted to $5,430 with my out-of-pocket being only $28.93.

Shirts – A total of 33 shirts were selected this month. These included some nice welcome surprises such as Armani (5), Breuer, Brioni, Burberry London, Canali (3), Charles Tyrwhitt (2), Ermenegildo Zegna (14), Givenchy, Ike Behar, Michael Kors, Rag & Bone, Versace, Yohji Yamamoto, Yves Saint Laurent (4) and two from Zanella. These are all very nice shirts and I am trying to be more selective in choosing only those that fit my size and still came up with thirty-three. I always welcome the name of Brioni as they are obviously made with special attention and the very best materials. Since I had recently created a special page for high-end shirts, the name of Yohji Yamamoto looked familiar when I saw his signature on a shirt label. After looking up the page on my cell phone and seeing that the brand sold at Barney’s for a range of $630 to $1,310, I quickly snagged it. Total retail for all of the shirts amounted to $11,283.50 with my out-of-pocket being only $152.40.

SweatersSweaters – The winter months typically bring out the cold weather clothing deposited by the “snow birds” coming in from the northern states and Canada. Overcoats and sweaters are in abundance more so this time of the year at some of the better Goodwill stores. Eight sweaters were picked up with the names of Burberry Brit, COOGI (2), Ermenegildo Zegna Sport, Giorgio Armani, Lanvin, Michael Kors and a purple label Ralph Lauren. Total retail for the sweaters amounted to $5,954.98 with my out-of-pocket being only $45.05.

PantsPants – Four pairs of pants were picked up, three from Italy. You just can’t pass up a great pair of slacks from Armani for less than three dollars, especially when they are black. A pair of dress slacks from Ermenegildo Zegna of wool and cashmere were found for those cool evening dinners. Another pair of brown pants from Canali were located for a little less than five dollars with a fourth good quality dark blue pants with no name that match a beautiful jacket completed a set for a suit. Total retail for the pants amounted to an estimated $1,415.00 with my out-of-pocket being only $17.36.

Ties – The number of ties were once again just short of the number of shirts this month for a total of 29. Some especially good finds were those of Charvet, Ermenegildo Zegna Quindici couture, Gucci (4), Kiton, Loro Piana, Marc Jacobs, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stefano Ricci and Tiffany & Company. Others located were from Armani, Bresciani, Burberry’s, Dries Van Noten, Ermenegildo Zegna (10), Robert Talbott (bow tie) and Sartori. Total retail for all of the ties amounted to $5,710.00 with my out-of-pocket being only $74.65.

Clothing hangers, shoe trees and a banana hanger.Shoes – I wasn’t able to find any shoes that were either my size or of a higher end brand I am interested in. I did however, find some nice cedar shoe trees that sell anywhere from twenty to twenty-eight dollars for a pair. These brands were Cole Haan, Johnston & Murphy, Jos. A Bank and Nordstrom. These add life and comfort to your leather footwear.

Hangers – Thick plastic hangers are great for placing wet clothing on to dry after washing but not for regular use in the closet. A better quality hanger is typically made of either cedar to keep the moths at bay or maple for longer life. When I see a good example of a wide maple hanger with pants cuff snaps, the price of $1.99 is well worth grabbing, especially those that sell new for about twenty dollars. Of all the hangers, I have found the brand Setwell to be a very good name to look for.

Fendi and Prada pursesAccessories – Also known as the miscellaneous category, accessories are items that I must have which don’t fit into any of the above groups. Two purses that proved to be originals and not fakes were picked up for my daughters and/or presents were from Fendi (Zucca Elegant Tote) and Prada (small Esplanade). One of the Goodwill stores always has a great selection of purses in the jewelry cabinet but are often hard to see in the dark corner unless an attendant pulls them out to verify the brand and if they are made in Italy and not a fake from China.  Hummel figurines, Kate Spade iPhone cover, crocodile belt and Swank cuff-linksHummel figurines are very collectible and when I find these for less than ten dollars, they are well worth picking up. You have to be careful in that if the figurine has a small chip or is repaired in any way, they are then worth no more than one-half the suggested market price. I found three perfect examples, two with an earlier TMK 2 dating them to 1956. This category also brought in a much needed banana holder, a Kate Spade iPhone 7 cover, a black crocodile belt and a Swank set of pearl cuff-links. Total retail for all of these items amounted to $4,529.99 with my out-of-pocket being $134.27, the purses taking the bulk of this.

Note: Some items have been added at the end of the month that were not photographed if you happen to notice the discrepancy.

The recent addition of price comparison pages I created for the shirts, suits and ties has been a quick resource in helping me eliminate some of the brands that sound like something they are not. Although higher prices do not dictate higher quality, it is still nice to know where a brand is ranked in your local high-end stores. Future pages for shoes, sweaters, pants and watches are in the works with this same idea in mind. I hope this information works for you as well. The pages will be updated as time allows, probably annually. Knowing your brands as to which command a greater return on your investment is good business sense. Good luck with your Goodwill hunting.

February 2017 Summary

Logo smallFor the month of February this year, less than four hundred dollars was spent on sixty individual items for a retail value of right at thirty-nine thousand dollars. That equates to just over one hundred times the amount spent and meets a highly sought after triple-digit goal for each month. With a house full of much more than I will ever need or be able to sell, the selections are becoming more focused and have to either be of a high-end caliber or something that is actually of great use around the house. This rule isn’t always followed, especially right after payday but I’m working hard on that specific problem.

Treasures – There was a good number of what I consider treasures found this month of February. The trips to the local Goodwill stores has become more of a treasure hunt than locating quality clothing lately. Some of these treasures speak for themselves. When I discover the more elusive high-end items you rarely find outside Neiman Marcus, Saks or Barney’s for an affordable price and in like-new condition, this qualifies as a treasure. Any time I run across a “never thought I could ever afford” an item and it was in hand when I left the store, this qualifies as a treasure. Some of these this month were three tuxedo suits from Armani, Burberry and Zegna. Another suit located was from Oxxford Clothes. Jackets and vests with the names of Burberry, Cartier, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Marc Jacobs and Valentino are always a welcome site. Other treasures come with the names of Brioni, Alain Figaret and Bernini. The last item to fit this category is the early 1920s lady’s working wrist watch from A. LeCoultre, a name that later joined with another to form the famous Jaeger-LeCoultrè known today for expensive, well-made watches. Some treasured and hard to find names of ties were located this month: Dolce & Gabbana, Dunhill, Fendi, Isaia, Stefano Ricci, and Tiffany & Co (Hermès).

Suits – This was an especially great month for finding high-end suits. Four to be exact. I decided to head back to one of my favorite haunts to see if an Armani tuxedo was still hanging in the better quality rack but since it was now the following Friday, it would be half the tagged price. Sure enough, there it was. The tuxedo included the pants and judging from the inside pocket label, it had not been dry cleaned often but still looked quite new. The day started off right. Later, in the same store, I found an Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo jacket just my size and with excitement, it quickly joined the other Italian tuxedo. It wasn’t until I was ready to check out that the cashier said that the price of $14.99 included a pair of Zegna tuxedo pants that should have been hanging with the jacket. After a quick look through the other suits, I was able to locate the pants hanging with a different tuxedo jacket. My thanks to the observant cashier!  The very next Goodwill visit that day yielded a third tuxedo suit. This was a very nice example created by Burberry and looked very much the quality you expect from this British clothier. This one day yielded three very new looking tuxedo suits for a total of less than $82.  While talking about suits, a few days previous located a nice but one size too small chocolate brown Oxxford Clothes Manhattan from Neiman Marcus. The suit cost me less than twelve dollars but lists for just under five thousand new. It was an especially good month for suits.

Dress Jackets – Nine high-end dress jackets were purchased out of pocket for the grand sum of $72 but list new for a total of $15,325. These included, in alphabetical order, a blue Burberrys Millbank, a grey Cartier vest, three Ermenegildo Zegna jackets, a lady’s navy 1973 vintage Fendi Roma 365 by Contir, a dark grey Marc by Marc Jacobs and two from Valentino. The Fendi will have to find another owner of course and both of my daughters are trying to decide which of the two of them it fits best.

Shirts – Twenty shirts found their way into my crowded closet this month. These included, in alphabetical order, Alain Figaret, Armani (2), Bernini, Boss, Brioni, Ermenegildo Zegna (7), Ike Behar (3), Michael Kors, Valentino and Zanella (2). The French made Alain Figaret was a new brand to me but the quality was unmistakable. The Brioni, picked up for less than four dollars, is perhaps one of the best examples of a tuxedo shirt I will ever see and the list price is $790 on the Brioni website. It will look right at home with any of the three newly purchased tuxedos. Another great find like this was the Ermenegildo Zegna Su Misura that sells for $510. Anything from Valentino can be expected to list for a high price and this white shirt had a price of $450.

Sweaters – Only two sweaters were picked up but both were quite nice. One was from Armani Exchange and the other was from a company I was not as familiar with. I Levrieri produces a very nice cashmere and silk blend that is super soft and very warm.

Pants – I’ve not had much luck lately finding the high-end slacks as before. Hopefully, that will change. I was able to find a brown corduroy pair of Ermenegildo Zegna made in Portugal for little more than a five-dollar bill. That name is always a good find.

Ties usually have the greatest number but not this month. That title went to the shirts this time. I still found thirteen very nice examples of silk and they are listed alphabetically as follows: Brioni, Canali, Charles Tyrwhitt (2), Dolce & Gabbana, Dunhill, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Isaia, Lanvin, Stefano Ricci, Tiffany & Co. and Valentino. The solid gold Brioni is the perfect example of how a tie should be made. The Dolce & Gabbana came in as the highest priced retail at $275. This was the first time I had found a Dunhill, Isaia and a Tiffany & Co. and each produced the customary goose bumps and need to show the closest customer what I had found. The small number of ties was offset by the quality located in this case.

Hangers – Good, wooden clothing hangers are becoming harder to locate so when I find some at a good price, they immediately go into the buggy. This month, I picked up two thick, well made CedarScents hangers and nine other wooden hangers well suited for the needs of the recent purchased shirts, suits and dress jackets. I am still looking for a number of good pants cuff hangers made by Setwell.

The accessories category yielded some interesting items. A 1920s Swiss made 14K gold filled lady’s A. LeCoultre watch will make for a great birthday present for one of my daughters. Some of the other items located was a brand new American Girl Julie 6-book set with game, Peter Pauper Press Butterflies blank journal, Hermès Eau D’Orange Verte bath soap in the original plastic container, wall clock from FirstTime that keeps time, a Fossil purse, an Adams Titian Ware platter and two Royal Tudor Ware Olde England salad plates. That’s quite a variety of items but each was purchased for its uniqueness and desire to fit a certain niche.

The following table below shows this month’s expenditures with my cost, the tagged price and a link to the retail prices where I could find the item or one similar.

January 2017 Summary

Logo smallThe year of 2017 started off very well with a good variety as well as some very nice items I had not counted on finding. My triple-digit goal was surpassed beyond my expectations with the retail being almost 200 times as much as I spent on the 44 items located;  $283 spent for $55,147 retail. That’s a goal that probably won’t be surpassed for quite a while.

Giorgio Armani Black Label tailsJanuary offered a great number of items most anyone would probably consider a treasure. I was able to obtain at half the Goodwill price of $99 an Armani black label tuxedo. Not only is it a tuxedo but a more formal tailcoat tuxedo, you know, the penguin style. It is the same item as what Richard Gere wore on the 1980 movie American Gigolo. I was going through the coats looking for my preferred labels and ran across Giorgio Armani, A Milano Borgunonuovo 21 and instantly knew it was a great find. As I laid it up on the cashier’s counter, we were talking about the find and I Neiman Marcus label under the collarnoticed under the left collar a Neiman Marcus price tag which reflected a suggested price of $2,595. Not bad for my price of $49.99. Not only was this a great find but the suit was obviously brand new and had never been worn. Another extraordinary find was picked up at a local auction so I’ve included it in my thrift finds. That is a Rolex ladies Presidential Day Date watch. I offered a high price of $26 on it just in case no one else bid on it and to my surprise that was the price the auction gavel went down on. The watch is a bit too splashy for me but worth the risk of the possibility of it being a fake after researching it through the Internet for others that looked just like it. The jury is still out on whether it is a good fake or the real thing.

Giorgio Armani Black Label for the tux tailsOnly one item was found to fit the suit category and that is the Armani tails located in an out-of-the-way Goodwill store. This store is the smallest of all the stores I frequent but I’ve found some of the best items here including an $8,500 Kiton jacket. The store is in a less prolific part of town but this is to an advantage in that the locals are not as familiar with some of the high-end names I like to look for. Click the photographs to see a higher resolution version.

Four coats were picked up this month well worth mentioning. The name of Burberrys’ with an apostrophe is always a welcome sight. This navy jacket is a Super 100s and looks like it wasn’t worn very often. Another great label is from Italy and that is of Canali. I was not familiar with the KEI Collection but the quality is definitely Canali. The dark brown plaid has a hint of blue in it and should look great with dark brown or dark blue slacks. The two other coats come from one of my favorite brands; Ermenegildo Zegna. Both of these are jet black with one being made in Switzerland and the other from Italy.

Burberrys' Commuter II overcoatIt always makes my day when I see an overcoat from Burberry. I’ve noticed the price of this brand commands a higher number than most but is well worth paying the amount, especially when you can find it with the Goodwill color tag indicating it is half the sticker price. This Burberrys’ Commuter II overcoat was picked up for a little more than twelve dollars. Not bad!

A lucky number of thirteen shirts were gathered this month with the great names of Armani, Burberry, Canali, Ermenegildo Zegna (5), Luigi Borrelli, Ted Baker, Yves Saint Laurent and Zanella (2). This was only the second Borrelli shirt I’ve located and raised a few goose bumps when the name popped up amongst the other shirts on the rack. I like the tighter fit of the Italian shirts around the waist and those from Canali seem to fit me as though they were Made To Measure. The same is true for the Zegna shirts where I normally wear the size XL but with European shirts, I’ve learned to check the L section of shirts for a better fit.

A few months ago, I found five Ermenegildo Zegna sweaters in a row in the shirt section. One of these retailed for $1,200 so I have learned to grab this seldom seen brand where sweaters are hanging. This certain item lists for about half this ($595) but it fits and feels great on these cold Winter mornings.

This colorful category of ties brought in some new names this month that I seldom see.  Some of these included Alberto Piano, Anthime Mouley, Aquascutum, Canali, Ermenegildo Zegna (2), Luciano Barbera, Oxxford Crest, Symmetry, and Vineyard Vines (7). The tie from Oxxford Crest is my first and what a beautiful tie this US company makes. I picked it up for less than two dollars and it retails for right at three hundred. The French made Anthime Mouley is super soft and of the highest quality. My youngest daughter mentioned earlier that I would never find any clothing from her favorite Vineyard Vines but here are seven new ties with price tag examples I can show her. She is right on one account. This is the first time I’ve seen this brand in the tie section.

Tory Burch pumps & Bally sneakersIn the field of shoes, Tory Burch is a highly sought after brand of women’s quality footwear. I located a brand new, black, patent leather pair with the large gold logo squarely placed on the toe. Ironically, the shoe I found was on the floor behind the jewelry counter but you had to be tall enough to see it lying next to the counter. My older daughter has mentioned a time or more that I should buy a nice pair of these for her if I should ever encounter them at the Goodwill. I called her to make sure I had her size correct and had to put up with a 3-second scream over the phone which told me they were indeed her size. Another brand I enjoy looking for is Bally made in Switzerland. These are always of top notch quality but only affordable within my budget when located on the shoe rack at the Goodwill. This pair of high-priced sneakers was picked up for less than eight dollars and retails for close to six hundred. Should I say it was a good month for shoes?

Gucci glasses, cuff links and moreThe accessories section of the blog is always fun due to the fact that it is the miscellaneous area that could include anything that does not fit any other category. This month was no exception. A variety included silver cufflinks from Anson, gold cufflinks from Swank, a Sterling silver tie bar from Swank, a Sterling silver Alabama charm, a nice silver tie tack, a pair of Gucci titanium rimmed glasses with case and the super nice Rolex ladies Super President gold and diamond encrusted watch. Rolex women's Super Presential watchYou never know what you will find but make sure you have enough money in your account just in case you find a great deal you don’t want to pass over.

As always, the table below shows this month’s expenditure with my cost, the tagged price and a link to the retail prices. How has your year started out?

November 2016 Summary

Logo smallThis is always a good month toward the end to find some good items in the Goodwill as many people are in a generous mood with it being the Thanksgiving holiday and having time off from work to do some much needed house cleaning. This was the case this year as well. A total of only forty items were located for this list.

Some of the treasures located were in the usual categories. A beautiful deep brown herringbone weave Oxxford Clothes suit was located for less than a ten dollar bill and it fit nicely. As usual, there is a reason these items show up at the Goodwill and a little needle and thread will fix this suit’s problem. Ermenegildo Zegna showed up with two jackets of their highest quality with one being a tan 15milmil15 and the other a medium blue Trofeo. These two words always bring out the goose bumps. An older but still beautiful eight hundred dollar Giorgio Armani men’s sweater was picked up for less than six dollars. The real gem in this month’s collection has to be the ladies black leather boots from Prada. The Italians have a way of bringing out the best in leather goods. Not a bad find for less than twenty dollars. A second genuine alligator belt for $3.99 showed up on the rack and was quickly snatched. The last treasure in this month’s find was a Versace black belt with silver buckle for a total of $2.39.

Two beautiful suits from Samuelsohn and Oxxford Clothes. Two suits made the list this month. The first was a great looking deep brown herringbone Super 130’s from Oxxford Clothes. This company has been in business since 1916 and is well supported by comments like those from Forbes magazine calling it the best American suit and the Robb Report calling them “the quintessential American suit maker”. This one was purchased for less than ten dollars and lists for $4,575. Great quality, style and fit for a fantastic price. The second suit is a navy with thin dark grey pen stripes from Samuelsohn, also of Super 130’s wool. It has a small moth hole that can easily be repaired and make a great statement when worn.

Coats of Christian Dior, Lanvin, Ermenegildo Zegna and SamelsohnThis was a good month for name brand dress jackets. This started off with a well refined light grey Christian Dior Boutique Paris jacket of top quality. Then, there were the two Ermenegildo Zegna high end 15milmil15 and Trofeo jackets. A tan patch pocketed Lanvin French jacket was located and the last was a deep gray Samuelsohn. A good collection of suit jackets for anyone’s wardrobe.

Shirts from Ermengildo Zegna, Burberry, Ted Baker, John Varvatos, Michael Kors, Armani Jeans and a sweater from Giorgio Armani.I was being a bit more selective on the shirts to take home this time. There were two from Burberry with one being from the Brit collection and the other from the higher end London category. Some of the other shirts included a very nice cream colored Armani Jeans, brown striped dress shirt from John Varvartos, a Michael Kors black polo style, soft light plum from Ted Baker and an assortment of four from Ermenegildo Zegna. A very expensive Giorgio Armani black sweater was picked up for six bucks.

Pants were found from Ermenegildo Zegna (2), Santorelli and Jack Victor.Only four pairs of pants were found but made for an interesting variety. An higher end pair of Ermenegildo Zegna was snatched as soon as they were found as well as a less formal pair of softer grey slacks. Jack Victor showed up with a great pair of glossy navy pair I’ve been looking for. The fourth pair were a high quality comfortable cotton slacks from Santorelli

Ties from Coach, Versace, 2004 Olympics, Benini, Stefano Ricci, Burberry, Hermes and Ermenegildo Zegna.Eight ties of extraordinary quality made the selection this month. Coach showed up with a very nice blend of silk and linen tan with regimental blue stripes. Versace lived up to its flamboyant colors and designs with a V2 selection. I then found a strange but very well preserved Athens 2004 deep blue Olympics tie. You never know what you might find. Bernini makes some very nice 7-fold ties and this dark green one will look nice with the dark brown Oxxford suit described previously. Stefano Ricci is always a welcome name in my collection and this one fits the category of first pick when matching with a grey suit. A wine red unmarked tie was recognized quickly with the well-known Burberry “Equestrian Knight” logo all over it. One of the highlights this month was seeing and purchasing a lightly used, beautiful dark blue Hermès tie. This is always a name I enjoy seeing for possible purchase! The last tie located was a very dressy silver and white regimental broad striped Ermenegildo Zegna, another name that always bringing up the goose bumps.

Prada boots, versace and alligator belts, watches from Breitling and Bell & RossOne of the better surprises of this collection was finding a pair of ladies Prada boots. They were marked with an affordable price of $24.95 which, with my coupon, brought it down to $19.97. I asked the lady to put my name on them to have the other boot brought out when I was ready to cash out. Both of my daughters tried them on but were just a bit too small. Looks like Santa will have to keep looking.  Speaking of leather, I also located two belts, one black Versace with a silver buckle for $2.39 and another genuine alligator belt for $3.99. A Breitling and a Bell & Ross ladies watch was picked up for a possible Christmas present next month.

Parker Brothers Monopoly and 2006 Burberry fragrance bearThe category of accessories is a fun place to put the “other” items found that are a lot of fun to find. A vintage wooden box of the Monopoly game with all pieces accounted for was picked up. I was not aware Parker Brothers made such an item back then but this has a solid wood box with sliding top and the cards are obviously of the older vintage. Santa did, however, show up with a Burberry bear for the year 2006 which will fit in well with the collection of the other two of the following years for my younger daughter.

Interesting assortment of clothes hangers, diploma folder and a set of Swank cufflinks & shirt studs.Good quality clothes hangers are always a welcome sight. I was able to find a couple of large maple coat hangers but the real find was three huge, Italian walnut colored suit hangers with solid brass hooks and a brass cap atop a vertical wooden dowel. I am not sure what the dowel is for and posted a query with Real Men Real Style to see if they knew. Are you familiar with this type of hanger? They must have cost a small fortune when purchased new. A very large adjustable chrome store clothes hanger with a heavy chrome base came in handy to hang all the winter overcoats on. It will hold up to about twenty with no problem. Also in this photograph are a nice set of Swank black art deco cufflinks and matching shirt studs. These are hard to find for a decent price but were listed for $5.99. The University of Phoenix diploma holder was needed for gift for a friend.

The following chart shows what I paid, the tagged price and the retail if purchased new price with a link to where the price of the item or one similar was found.  Thank you again, to the people who donate such fine articles for those of us who can otherwise not afford the quality of these items.

September 2016 Summary

Logo smallEditor’s note: I was paid a third paycheck on the last Friday of this month and visited three Goodwill stores after work. The information below has been updated to reflect this in the text and the old information was place in paranthesis for comparison.

A major goal has finally been met and it’s time to pull in the reins and begin working toward the next goal, that of selling off at least eighty percent of what I have accumulated that hasn’t already been sold. This month’s purchase was half of that of last month by a good margin but the magic number of retail amount of 100 times the purchase price was met a second time this year. The fifty-one (thirty-seven) items purchased came to a total retail amount of just over $77,000 ($33,000) and the magic number of 107.5 (108.8) times if purchased at full retail from what I paid. It was a good month and I took advantage of the paycheck on the last day of the month (still have a week to go but have run out of money).

The plan was to pull back and purchase only the highest names in the market when available. This typically means that you have to be there when the product comes out the door and is still on the cart before it is hung up in its respective place in the store. This month, there were no purchases of suits, overcoats or pocket squares. Even so, there were some great items found.

Dress jackets of Gucci, Brioni, Armani and Alexander WangThere were four (Only one) dress jackets purchased with great selections found with the names of Armani, Brioni and Gucci as well as locating a dark, shiny, blue silk and wool from Ermenegildo Zegna. It was well worth the sixteen dollars I paid for it and will be the jacket first worn tomorrow to work. The Armani was  a dark blue sport jacket, great for just throwing on and going shopping. The Brioni was an especially nice gold plaid silk with the typical high quality you would expect with a name like this. The other treasure was the new faintly striped black Gucci found near closing time and fits like it was bespoke.

shirts and sweatersThere were ten (six) shirts located in amongst all the multicolored solids and patterns. Of these ten (six), there was a solid white Brioni, five carried the name of Burberry, three from Ermenegildo Zegna and a very nice shirt from Prada filled in with the last purchase.

Three (Two) sweaters were purchased with two meant as birthday and Christmas presents to keep the warmth inside and look good outside. These were from Armani Exchange with the name from top to bottom and a very nice merino wool black sweater from Gio Ferrari. Another last minute surprise was a black zipper hoodie from Alexander Wang.

pants and dress jacketThe pants section carried the surprise badge this month with seven top end brands. A brown pair of Brioni Sport pants were quickly picked up  despite being very wrinkled requiring some needle and thread to fix a few areas where it appeared the pants had been put into a dryer causing the damage. Not something you do with 100% wool pants on any day. After a few rounds of hand steaming and some handwork with a needle and matching thread, you never would have known that the pants had looked as bad as they did the day before. Additional last minute ties and shirtsA dressy pair of Christian Dior Le Connaissuer dark blue pants would look great with the silk jacket mentioned earlier. Four pairs of Ermenegildo Zegna were found at one store, all the same size. Two pairs of these were a black and brown set of jeans while the other two were specially made Su Misura items of fantastic soft wool. Santorelli rounded out the set of pants with a charcoal pair of Romeo 1900F.

ties for SeptemberAs usual, the ties brought in the greatest variety and in this case, also the greatest number of items; nineteen (fifteen). Listed alphabetically were Burberrys, Canali (2), Charvet, Ermenegildo Zegna (6), Hermès (3), Italo Ferretti, Jon vanDyk, Massimo Dutti, Stefano Ricci,  Valentino and Gianni Versace. It has been a while since I found any from Hermès and was glad to see two on the rack. A black Charvet Place Vendôme was put in the cart making it a third from this French company. Also, another was a very nice tie from Stefano Ricci priced at less than a dollar. All of these were great finds at an affordable price.

shoes for SeptemberThere were three pairs of shoes picked up this month. One of my favorites is from Bally and although they are a bit too narrow, they are undergoing a softening and stretching using Allen Edmond leather conditioner and extra-large cedar shoe trees. The other two pairs of shoes were a bit pricy but well worth the payment. These were ladies shoes from Manolo Blahnik and Tory Burch. My oldest daughter has already put a claim on both. We’ll see.

Hermes purse and videosIn the accessories segment of this month’s haul comes the repeat of a very famous name; Hermès. While looking within the counter of watches, purses certain item? Although I doubt that it is the real thing, it is still worth taking a chance for less than a twenty dollar bill to make sure it received special attention as to whether it was the real thing or not. I have fourteen days to take it back for a store credit should I wish to take it back. The other two items in this category were a plastic ruler needed for the metric measurements and a sealed, in-the-box bottle of men’s Eau de Toilette cologne from Salvatore Ferragamo. New Seiko watch in the boxAnother last minute find was the gold watch in it’s original box with papers from Seiko. A ten dollar battery and the watch was running as usual. The Seiko dealer said the watch looked like it was brand new and unused.

All in all, this was a nice haul for the month even if you take out the Hermès Birkin bag should it be bogus. It will make a nice present for some lady back home at Christmas time just for the fun of it.

The following chart shows the purchases for the month of September as well as links to where I found the retail price or one very similar to it.

August 2016 Summary

Logo smallAs with many thrift stores, Goodwill offers many items of great quality for the same price as those items of greater inferiority. Knowing brands of selectable items of varying value becomes important when choosing something you wish to add to your wardrobe that will not only last a long time but also look good on you. Sharing my monthly educational venture is just part of the fun of putting these treasure hunts together. Bringing the family into the mix of the hunt makes it all the more fun when they find something of even greater value to them and you get to share their excitement.

The month of August is typically an especially great month and this month was no exception. Though I fell short of the magical three-digit retail goal, I was able to squeak out 91 times what I paid but I also increased the total amount of the now three thousand items purchased the past three and half years to 77 times of what it would have cost if purchased at retail. The total retail value hit a definite record of over sixty thousand dollars. That comes to an overall average spent per item of $4.33 vs $331.85 per item if purchased at full retail. Those numbers make for a better relative comparison you can see.

There were indeed a few treasures. A very nice Ermenegildo Zegna 15milmil15 dress coat was located for $7.98. It’s hard to believe the cloud soft coat is made from 100% wool but the 15-micron width fiber makes for the ultimate smooth and feather light coat. Another coat worth mentioning was the Oxxford Clothes tuxedo made from this country’s finest tailors. Two pairs of hard to find Italian pants were located that fit into this category. They are the silky smooth Brioni dress pants and the Yves Saint Laurent black iconic Le smoking trouser in black grain de poudre textured wool. Both are, of course, just my size. I also located two ties worth mentioning; a silver French Charvet and a fancy Stefano Ricci, both of which retail for well over $200 each.

Now, for the real treasure. I located an older watch that I knew would be worth the price paid and it was just this piece that allowed me to meet my ultimate goal of this entire project. More on that later. The watch is an Audemars Piguet chronograph automatic tourbillon perpetual. It is certainly worth the price paid. It pays to know what brand to look for even if it only fits on your wrist. Although I did not find it at a Goodwill store, it did come as a used item. Now, to make sure it isn’t a well made fake.

coatsThere were a number of suits found but only two were purchased. The first was a very nice medium grey Canali with matching pants that didn’t look as though they had been worn at all. Canali is a great buy with the finest quality at a decent price. This suit retails for about $2,100. The other was purchased due to the name and the price. A black formal Giorgio Armani Collezioni suit walked out the door with me for only $8.48 total.

jacketsThree overcoat/jackets were found toward the last of the month. The first was on half-off day and well worth the $24.95 paid for a suede leather Giorgio Armani jacket with button-out wool liner. The jacket sells for more than a hundred times that much. The other two were Ermenegildo Zegna with one being a brown EZ cotton/linen jacket and the other a navy button-up wind jacket. Both of the quality you expect from Zegna.

shirtsOnly eighteen shirts were purchased this past month with the bulk being four from Giorgio Armani, four from Ermenegildo Zegna and three from Canali. The others were from Burberry, Charles Tyrwhitt, Dolce & Gabbana, Gitman Brothers and John Varvatos. My daughter located two she liked from anvil and Human. Her taste in clothing and mine are quite different.

Two sweaters were found at a wide range in price from each other. The Armani Exchange (A|X) sells for $90 while the Ermenegildo Zegna is listed at almost $800.

pantsFive pairs of pants made the list this month. Brioni is always a welcome name to find on the rack. This pair of yellow are silky smooth like you would expect from one of the best brands in the world. Two pairs of Zegna pants were located; one pair of brown dress pants that match a coat recently located and another pair of cashmere and cotton blend (Cashco) corduroy. Zanella offers a great variety of quality pants at affordable pricing ($395) but this pair is their best with the additional name of Platinum edging the price up to $49Austin-shirt5. The real surprise was the top of the line Yves Saint Laurent black dress pants located online for $890. I paid full price at the Goodwill for these at $6.99.

I don’t look good in shorts but my daughter found three pairs she couldn’t part with. The two pair from Nike FitDry sell for about $30 and the Adidas Climalite sells for $32.

tiesNow, we get down to one of my favorite sections; ties. Only eleven this month but they are really nice and hard to find – Bally, Canali (3), Charvet, Fellini, Fendi, Gieves & Hawkes, Santorelli, Stefano Ricci and Valentino.

Hangers: it would be nice to find buggy full of cedar hangers but only one such item was picked up this month and it was a great find!  I located a plastic suit hanger with the name Ermenegildo Zegna in raised gold letters. I paid fifty-two cents for a $75 hanger. That’s a lot of money for a piece of plastic.

shoesI can safely say that I have too many pairs of shoes and am having a problem putting them in safe places where they won’t get scratched or collect dust. It is usually when you don’t need something that you find it and vice-versa. A fellow worker is way over six feet tall and wears size 16 shoes. I located a very nice pair of Allen Edmonds Nashua in his size and swapped the pair for my share of the weekly pizza cost for a while. Another pair of black Allen Edmonds Strand cap-toe Oxfords are waiting to have a nice coat of wax applied before wearing to work next week. Two additional pair of shoes in brand new condition were found: a pair of black Bally New Sauges and a pair of Freeman brown loafers. My daughter picked out a pair of Chaco sandals and a pair of Birkenstock Betula. That made her day as well.

accessoriesThe accessories category is always interesting and although there were only a few items purchased here, they are quite unique. Though I paid too much for the cologne, a 125ml bottle of men’s Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme should help me through the days at work for a while. Two belts of high demand made it into the buggy; a Vineyard Vines blue and white belt and a brown leather high-end Yves Saint Laurent should look good in a birthday package soon.

Burberry-trench-coatLast minute additions included a very nice Burberry black trench coat with zip out lining with the usual brown plaid inside. Another
Ermenegildo Zegna jacket was picked up as well. This one is made for summer and comes with patch pockets for those informal times when you just want to look good. A Brioni shirt was quickly picked even though it is too small. Couldn ‘t pass up the price of only $7.18 for this top quality shirt. A white turtleneck Givenchy sweater caught my eye when I saw the definitive logo showing through the other items on the rack. A brand new pair of Allen Edmonds black loafers were found for a little more than a ten dollar bill. Burberry-Bear-2008My daughter will appreciate the 2008 Burberry bear located with tags still attached. Looks brand new and a birthday is coming up soon. Two leather belts were located; one black Tulliani and another from Calcaterra that has the words “Genuine Alligator” stamped on the inside next to the name and belt size.  It’s always exciting when you find a watch box with the double G logo indicating Gucci. This box though was sans the watch but did have all of the multicolored circles you place around a woman’s watch to match an outfit. Last, but not least, was a bag of six old Indian arrowheads of various sizes and color, a spear point and a flint knife for a total price of $4.79.

Here are the seventy-seven items purchased this month listed in similar fashion as before.

June 2016 Summary

Logo smallThe only way to meet a goal is to set one and repeatedly strive to achieve it. This month, I was able to meet that goal of obtaining an average purchase of less than 1/100th of the actual retail price. The retail price of all of this month’s purchase would have been 107 times as much as I paid at the local Goodwill stores. I spent sixty dollars less than last month ($262) but the end retail price ($27,931) was $6,300 more. It was a good month.

The month of June this year found fewer items total but the items were of a higher end type of clothing and accessories. A number of the treasures found this month were found in some of out-of-the-way Goodwill stores, not the usual high-end neighborhoods you would suspect to find them in. This certainly makes it worth the while to hit them all at least once a month but you pretty well have to be there when the items hit the floor. What a surprise it was to find a suit in great condition my size from Gianni Versace. I was a little suspect as to the authenticity when I saw that it came from Hong Kong and the jury is still out on this one. Speaking of Versace, two of the black Classic V2 shirts were located. A quality Dolce & Gabbana thick cotton long sleeve shirt with hidden buttons showed up on one of the trips. A pair of Coach men’s black lace up shoes appeared on the shelf with a low price and were quickly snagged. With one of my daughter’s birthdays coming up next month, her favorite black wallet by Kate Spade was found and the price was well within my budget, especially as a birthday present.

Only one suit was located this month and for a great price of $15.97 and this was the one made by Versace. A beautiful gray suit by Canali had me wondering if it should make its way into my buggy but the price tag of $99.99 was just way too much and even if plucked from the rack on half-off day it would still be more than twice as much as the usual suit price of $19.99.

201606-jacketsI’ve held off on buying high-end jackets unless they fit now and five beautiful suit jackets are now in this month’s purchase. These were an Armani Collezioni black tuxedo, a white and black hounds tooth Burberry’s from Bullocks, a nice jacket made from Ermenegildo Zegna window pane cloth, an Ermenegildo Zegna ~Soft~ jacket and two English Gieves & Hawkes.

201606-shirtsThis was the month of shirts, 21 actually. I located a Giorgio Armani Collezioni dress blue shirt, a rare yellow Borelli, two from Brioni (one of my favorites), two from Burberry, three from Canali, the white specialty Dolce & Gabbana, five from Ermenegildo Zegna, two surprise finds from Givenchy, a heavy gray one from Luciano Barbera, the two black shirts from Versace Classic and one brown from Zanella.

Only one pair of pants caught my eye that I bought and these were a beautiful pair of dark brown from Canali. I saw another pair of brown silky wool from Santorelli but didn’t want to pay the high price of $24.99 when I see them in other stores marked at $6.99.

201606-tiesOf course, I picked up some really nice ties, ten less than last month. These were from Bally (1), Brioni (2), Burberry(s) (4), Canali (2), Ermenegildo Zegna (5), Gucci (1), Italo Ferretti (1), one from a company claiming the name Italy but made in Korea, one from Ted Baker and a black silk bow tie without a name. A multicolored silk pocket square was found hiding in one of the jackets, no name either.

In the shoe department, the only pair of Coach men’s black lace ups I have ever seen were located and although they are a size too small, they will help finance further purchases by finding their way to someone else’s feet. A beautiful pair of brown, like new, tassel loafers from Johnson & Murphy shined up like they just came out of the box and they fit perfectly.

201606-accessoriesThere wasn’t much located in the accessories category this month which is probably why the rate went over 100 times as much if purchased retail. Wooden hangers and tie hangers always bring down the difference and not too many were found this month. The Kate Spade ladies wallet made it quickly into this selection as did a pair of Swank golden cufflinks and tie bar. Not included in this month’s listing but rather last month are the Ermenegildo Zegna eye glasses and Parfum bag. Their pictures are shown due to not making it last month.

Here is a synopsis of this last month’s purchases and their retail value with links to where I found the item or one very similar to it since some of these are no longer being made. Goodwill hunting!

October 2015 Summary

Click to see up close. (magnified).

Logo smallThis month (October) was a great month for finding some out of the ordinary items. But then, you might be able to say that for every month which makes Goodwilling a lot fun and much like a treasure hunt, not knowing what you will find. This was the first time I found a CHANEL tie, a GUCCI wallet, a GUCCI purse, two Oxxford Clothes suits with a ticket pocket, a Versace suit for $10, Zegna sport jacket, Zegna brown corduroy pants, Dolce & Gabbana belt, Allen Edmonds belt, Ralph Lauren Purple Label shirt and tie, and a beautiful, expensive, high end Zilli tie. As a side note, many thanks to the people who donate such fine items as these and more so that those of us who would ordinarily not be able to afford such fine things can now own them!

Not only did I find one Oxxford suit (coat and pants) but make that two, one gray and another dark blue. These are, in my opinion as well crafted as some others, great high end American made suits made to measure as well as bespoke. A “Giorgio Armani” black label dress jacket showed up on the rack but didn’t stay there long once discovered. I always like finding clothing by Chiavari and this dress coat fit perfectly. Then, there was the black Zegna silky sport jacket made to fit as well as the new tech Zegna cool shirt I found. There were the purple label shirt and tie by Ralph Lauren I seldom see and the sweaters by Christian Dior, Ermenegildo Zegna, Zegna Sport and Hugo Boss that immediately jumped into my buggy. I did not realize that I had purchased as many ties as I had with the regular names of Salvatore Ferragamo, Burberry’s, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Christian Dior as well as four more from Hermes. The name Hermes is at the top of the list of high-end clothing and accessories as is their price. Of course, I have already mentioned the ties from Chanel, Gucci and Zilli that are seldom seen. This month also found some great shirts by Armani Exchange, Burberry’s, Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Ermenegildo Zegna, Zanella, John Varvatos, Ike Behar and Christian Dior.  There were not as many pair of pants found this time but the ones I found were really nice, such as: MANI (Giorgio Armani), Ermenegildo Zegna and Christian Dior. The belts located were really nice and these sported the labels of Allen Edmonds, Dolce & Gabbana, and Yves Saint Laurent. The five pair of shoes located looked like new and had the names of Salvatore Ferragamo and Allen Edmonds along with enough cedar trees to fit into twice as many shoes.

In the ladies department, I picked up a Gucci wallet for eleven dollars and a classic grey Gucci purse for less than thirteen dollars. These were nice finds intended for my daughters along with the pair of brand new Ferragamo shoes. You can see from the photo above that this is not all of the items but a good selection you might find if you learn some of the better quality names and get lucky. You have to wonder what Goodwill might have had earlier in the store that you never saw, doesn’t it?

Here is the latest spreadsheet following of this month’s (October) haul and it would appear that the high end items are increasing, percentage wise. This is a substantial increase in the value vs cost (112x vs 90x) while spending $140 less this month compared to last month. November promises to be even better.

September 2015 Summary

Logo smallI’ve suspected it all along but now I know that I’ve become a label looker. That is, I find myself ignoring the item when pushing through the waves of cotton and wool in favor of finding certain manufacturer’s labels. It’s that rush of adrenaline that hits you when you find labels such as Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Burberry, or even Louis Vuitton. Well, I had such an experience several times this month. When you compare the price for many of these items you are lucky enough to find at Goodwill as to what you would pay for the item new, it becomes a treasure hunt that when bitten, you have a hard time ignoring.

September 2015 earlierTake this past week as a good example of great items found all at once. One of my favorite brands is Ermenegildo Zegna. Great quality at a price I would not ordinarily be able to afford even at a discount store like Off Fifth Avenue. On a last minute decision, I hit one of my favorite Goodwills and as I began to give up, there they were, seven Zegna sweaters hanging on the rack amidst the colored shirts. On a hunch, I went back the next day thinking that since they were all the same size that there may be more items from Zegna such as shirts or pants. No luck there but I did find a black second Burberry trench coat and a pair of brown Salvatore Ferragamo loafers that fit perfectly. Did I mention the initial find of a Burberry Sateen trench coat and Burberry Commodore overcoat I found earlier in the month. Just my size, of course! This month was also a banner month for finding some top end shirts including not only Zegna but also Armani, Burberry, Christian Dior, Eton, Valentino, Versace  and a hard to find Dolce & Gabbana. Check out the prices I paid vs the price they go for new in the spreadsheet following. Links provided give you a location where I found the prices for the item or one very much like the one I found.

September 2015 laterA friend at work turned me on to a new brand of shoes I was earlier unaware of. He buys his shoes at Allen Edmonds which has a store not far from one of my favorite Goodwill stores. This is one of the last if not the last major shoe company that still makes their product totally in the United States. I plan to visit the store but will have to wait until the next pay day as this month’s “allowance” has already been spent. So far, I have been fortunate enough to run across several pair in the Goodwill my size for less than seven dollars each and am now considering having a new pair custom made while they have their annual sale. In my opinion, they are that much better of quality than many of the “higher end” shoes I thought I had to have. Not only do I receive more compliments on this brand than my Salvatore Ferragamo or Gucci shoes costing twice as much but they are also consistently much more comfortable at the end of a long day of work. What has been your experience with this brand?

I spent a bit more than I usually do this month but there were a number of items I just couldn’t leave behind as you can see below. Here are some but not all of this month’s haul that I plan to either update my current wardrobe, give as birthday gifts or sell outright to recoup my expenses. My younger daughter has a birthday coming up and I’ve been keeping her in mind as I look through the better items on the rack that would fit her both physically as well as her current taste in clothes. Wish me luck!
