February 2017 Summary

Logo smallFor the month of February this year, less than four hundred dollars was spent on sixty individual items for a retail value of right at thirty-nine thousand dollars. That equates to just over one hundred times the amount spent and meets a highly sought after triple-digit goal for each month. With a house full of much more than I will ever need or be able to sell, the selections are becoming more focused and have to either be of a high-end caliber or something that is actually of great use around the house. This rule isn’t always followed, especially right after payday but I’m working hard on that specific problem.

Treasures – There was a good number of what I consider treasures found this month of February. The trips to the local Goodwill stores has become more of a treasure hunt than locating quality clothing lately. Some of these treasures speak for themselves. When I discover the more elusive high-end items you rarely find outside Neiman Marcus, Saks or Barney’s for an affordable price and in like-new condition, this qualifies as a treasure. Any time I run across a “never thought I could ever afford” an item and it was in hand when I left the store, this qualifies as a treasure. Some of these this month were three tuxedo suits from Armani, Burberry and Zegna. Another suit located was from Oxxford Clothes. Jackets and vests with the names of Burberry, Cartier, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Marc Jacobs and Valentino are always a welcome site. Other treasures come with the names of Brioni, Alain Figaret and Bernini. The last item to fit this category is the early 1920s lady’s working wrist watch from A. LeCoultre, a name that later joined with another to form the famous Jaeger-LeCoultrè known today for expensive, well-made watches. Some treasured and hard to find names of ties were located this month: Dolce & Gabbana, Dunhill, Fendi, Isaia, Stefano Ricci, and Tiffany & Co (Hermès).

Suits – This was an especially great month for finding high-end suits. Four to be exact. I decided to head back to one of my favorite haunts to see if an Armani tuxedo was still hanging in the better quality rack but since it was now the following Friday, it would be half the tagged price. Sure enough, there it was. The tuxedo included the pants and judging from the inside pocket label, it had not been dry cleaned often but still looked quite new. The day started off right. Later, in the same store, I found an Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo jacket just my size and with excitement, it quickly joined the other Italian tuxedo. It wasn’t until I was ready to check out that the cashier said that the price of $14.99 included a pair of Zegna tuxedo pants that should have been hanging with the jacket. After a quick look through the other suits, I was able to locate the pants hanging with a different tuxedo jacket. My thanks to the observant cashier!  The very next Goodwill visit that day yielded a third tuxedo suit. This was a very nice example created by Burberry and looked very much the quality you expect from this British clothier. This one day yielded three very new looking tuxedo suits for a total of less than $82.  While talking about suits, a few days previous located a nice but one size too small chocolate brown Oxxford Clothes Manhattan from Neiman Marcus. The suit cost me less than twelve dollars but lists for just under five thousand new. It was an especially good month for suits.

Dress Jackets – Nine high-end dress jackets were purchased out of pocket for the grand sum of $72 but list new for a total of $15,325. These included, in alphabetical order, a blue Burberrys Millbank, a grey Cartier vest, three Ermenegildo Zegna jackets, a lady’s navy 1973 vintage Fendi Roma 365 by Contir, a dark grey Marc by Marc Jacobs and two from Valentino. The Fendi will have to find another owner of course and both of my daughters are trying to decide which of the two of them it fits best.

Shirts – Twenty shirts found their way into my crowded closet this month. These included, in alphabetical order, Alain Figaret, Armani (2), Bernini, Boss, Brioni, Ermenegildo Zegna (7), Ike Behar (3), Michael Kors, Valentino and Zanella (2). The French made Alain Figaret was a new brand to me but the quality was unmistakable. The Brioni, picked up for less than four dollars, is perhaps one of the best examples of a tuxedo shirt I will ever see and the list price is $790 on the Brioni website. It will look right at home with any of the three newly purchased tuxedos. Another great find like this was the Ermenegildo Zegna Su Misura that sells for $510. Anything from Valentino can be expected to list for a high price and this white shirt had a price of $450.

Sweaters – Only two sweaters were picked up but both were quite nice. One was from Armani Exchange and the other was from a company I was not as familiar with. I Levrieri produces a very nice cashmere and silk blend that is super soft and very warm.

Pants – I’ve not had much luck lately finding the high-end slacks as before. Hopefully, that will change. I was able to find a brown corduroy pair of Ermenegildo Zegna made in Portugal for little more than a five-dollar bill. That name is always a good find.

Ties usually have the greatest number but not this month. That title went to the shirts this time. I still found thirteen very nice examples of silk and they are listed alphabetically as follows: Brioni, Canali, Charles Tyrwhitt (2), Dolce & Gabbana, Dunhill, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fendi, Isaia, Lanvin, Stefano Ricci, Tiffany & Co. and Valentino. The solid gold Brioni is the perfect example of how a tie should be made. The Dolce & Gabbana came in as the highest priced retail at $275. This was the first time I had found a Dunhill, Isaia and a Tiffany & Co. and each produced the customary goose bumps and need to show the closest customer what I had found. The small number of ties was offset by the quality located in this case.

Hangers – Good, wooden clothing hangers are becoming harder to locate so when I find some at a good price, they immediately go into the buggy. This month, I picked up two thick, well made CedarScents hangers and nine other wooden hangers well suited for the needs of the recent purchased shirts, suits and dress jackets. I am still looking for a number of good pants cuff hangers made by Setwell.

The accessories category yielded some interesting items. A 1920s Swiss made 14K gold filled lady’s A. LeCoultre watch will make for a great birthday present for one of my daughters. Some of the other items located was a brand new American Girl Julie 6-book set with game, Peter Pauper Press Butterflies blank journal, Hermès Eau D’Orange Verte bath soap in the original plastic container, wall clock from FirstTime that keeps time, a Fossil purse, an Adams Titian Ware platter and two Royal Tudor Ware Olde England salad plates. That’s quite a variety of items but each was purchased for its uniqueness and desire to fit a certain niche.

The following table below shows this month’s expenditures with my cost, the tagged price and a link to the retail prices where I could find the item or one similar.
